MTS. & TUNNELS

The History of Mts. & Tunnels

Mts. & Tunnels started with a bunch of songs written in a basement of a creaky old Seattle farmhouse. I called up long time music pal Norman Baker, he learned the tunes on bass, Norm introduced me to a drummer named Daniel Nash and we started jamming as a trio. We recorded our first record this way at Mel Detmer’s studio. Katie and Liana tracked horns, Sandy Dickerson played Uke, Sara Schmidt added backup vocals and roommate Zach Stewart recorded some electric guitar.  The Seattle Weekly called it “cozy old school garage rock” At first we played shows with different members each night. We played in great music venues and dive bars, lots of good times and gluten free beer.

We got a call from a Seattle / LA guy named Conrad who liked our band and was starting a TV show. So we worked with him and a great crew to create the pilot episode for what became “Band In Seattle”.

I wrote a bunch of new songs, welcomed my second child Juniper into the world, accidentally burned my house down and Daniel our drummer moved to Colorado. The recording sessions for our second album For A Day Or A Lifetime were held at TJ Berry’s studio in Bothell. Norm and I played with a different drummer nearly every session. Daniel is on a few tracks as well as Kent Halvorsen, and Steven Barci. Dan Schmidt played the piano and his sister Sarah Schmidt sang backups and co-wrote a song with me called Trouble. We released our second album on a 12” vinyl to an energized crowd at the Fremont Abbey. We honed in on collage art and made some awesome music videos. We performed at great music festivals, venues and dive bars from Bellingham and San Francisco.

Sarah and I worked with Jason Webley and co-wrote 2 songs about a scrapbook found in a bay area dumpster by one of the founders of Burning Man: Chicken John. The book was filled with old clippings regarding the life of Margaret Rucker a founding daughter to the city of Everett, Wa. Several other awesome artists were involved in this project. Audiences laughed and cried, we did a short tour, a reproduction of the scrapbook was made that comes with a CD with songs written about it.
